While Camden Town may not be as cutting edge as it used to be, it remains one of the city’s top tourist attractions. Its sprawling markets are crammed to the gills with goodies; you can buy anything from designer knockoffs and cheap t-shirts to antique furniture, vintage clothes, flores and handmade glass jewellery. It’s home to music venues like the Jazz Café, Koko and the Underground, as well as many relatively cheap and cheerful eateries.
Why should I go here?
In Camden Town, you’ll find a host of tourist-orientated tat – and some hidden gems, if you’re lucky. The Stables have a mix of antiques, Asian artifacts, 50s and 60s clothing, old records, pine furniture, rugs and carpets, while the High Street markets offer cheap clobber. Camden Lock specializes in arts and crafts; you can pick up unique and individual candles, clothing, accessories, notebooks, paintings and photo albums. Regents Canal is a nice place for a stroll, and there are quirky buildings, cafes and shops nearby.
Populated by hippies, Goths and other alternative types, Camden’s a great place for people watching. It’s possible to check out the area without spending any money, and experience a London quite different to the West End and other sightseeing hubs.
Where is the Town?
Camden Town is in North London and has its own tube station. Mornington Crescent and Chalk Farm tube stations are also nearby.
