It’s obvious to any visitor that London’s famous river is one of its greatest assets. While ‘sarf’ London’s had a bad press over the years, this area south of the Thames has experienced a recent Renaissance. In the past decade, London’s South Bank has finally received the reputation it deserves as a centre for arts, culture and entertainment. Many of its original arts venues still stand, while a host of new attractions have sprung up to add to an already thriving atmosphere.

Why should I go here?

After an extensive period of redevelopment, there’s a real buzz around the South Bank and Bankside. The area is very pedestrian friendly, and a walk from Waterloo to Tower Bridge takes in some of the most

famous sights in London and is a good way to contemplate the city's history. You can pass the Tate Modern, Shakespeare’s Globe, London Eye (Millennium Wheel), Southwark Cathedral, the South Bank Centre and the Royal Festival Hall to name just a few. You’ll also see St Paul’s, the Houses of Parliament and the many well-known bridges from the south side of the river. Taking a stroll in the sunshine is absolutely free, and is a great way to soak up the pleasant ambiance of the city at your own pace.

It’s just south of the river Thames. You can access is from various tube stations, including London Bridge, Southwark and Waterloo.
