This working church is considered one of the most historic and interesting religious buildings in England.

Kings and queens, heroes and villains, statesmen and soldiers, poets and priests...

This famous abbey was founded around 800AD, with the present edifice planned and erected as a Royal Mausoleum by Henry III in memory of Edward the Confessor. Until George III's reign, most of the English Kings were buried within its walls. Most have been crowned here too, and you can see the famous Coronation Chair in Edward the Confessor’s Chapel. Many famous people have found their resting place here, with the well-known Poets’ Corner and the grave of the Unknown Warrior attracting lots of visitors.

How much does it cost? (January 2008)

The Abbey doesn’t charge people who want to worship, but it does rely on tourists and paying visitors for its income. Adults are £10.00, concessions £7.00 and a family ticket is £24.00.

Why should I go there?

This impressive 700-year old building attracts over a million visitors, worshippers and pilgrims to explore it every year. It’s a working church that has tremendous importance in the capital.
