How did Britannia Rule the waves? Find out at the National Maritime Museum, which hosts an impressive collection of traditional exhibits and interactive presentation on the ways of seafaring. Its various sections cover everything from the pioneers of sea travel such as Columbus and the Vikings, to naval battles in Gallipoli and Falklands, to the effect of climate and class on uniform styles.

Highlights include the uniform Nelson was wearing when he wa

s fatally shot, a golden 18th century royal barge and the glass-roofed Neptune Court. Designed by Inigo Jones, the wonderful white neoclassical building is spectacular and worth a visit in itself. Even landlubbers should find something to appreciate here – and of course, it’s free.
