Stephenson’s Rocket, a V2 missile and Apollo 10 command module are just a few of the exhibits on display.

Discover how science affects and influences the world around us

It’s said the Museum brings science to life and life to science. Its galleries chronicle major developments in science, such as the creation of the steam engine and the birth of the space rocket. With its SimEx Simulator Ride and IMAX cinema, the high-tech Welcome Wing is particularly popular. There are exhibitions on how science affects art, energy, the environment, medicine and biology, space and transport.

Why should I go there?

The Museum’s vastness is testament to the Victorians’ fascination with science – a fascination that reigns strong among people of all ages today. As well many intriguing exhibits, there are heaps of interactive elements too. You can explore space, learn about medical and veterinary history, find out how meteorologists predict the weather and even test your co-ordination flying a helicopter (albeit a mini version). There's plenty to do here, and the Launchpad - a physics exploration largely aimed at children - has just been relocated and reinvented with over electrifying shows, lively demos and over 50 exhibits. It offers the chance to spin like a skater, control a magnetic cloud and even launch a rocket. Entry is free, but there are charges for the IMAX 3D Cinema and simulators, as well as for some special exhibitions.

Where is the Museum?

It’s in ‘Museumland’ on Exhibition Road, near the Natural History Museum and V&A. Like the others it’s easily reached from South Kensington tube station – just follow the signs.
